How to Generate UUIDs

No sign-up, no installation — it works right here in your browser.

  1. Step 1:Choose the UUID version: v4 for random IDs, v7 for time-sortable database keys or v1 for time-based IDs.
  2. Step 2:Set how many UUIDs you need and pick a format: uppercase, without hyphens, with braces or quotes, or comma-separated.
  3. Step 3:Click Generate UUIDs, then copy the list or download it as a text file. Use the validator to inspect any existing UUID.

UUID Generator FAQ

What is the difference between UUID and GUID?

None in practice. GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) is Microsoft's name for the same 128-bit identifier standard. GUIDs are often shown in uppercase and wrapped in braces, which you can enable in the format options.

Should I use UUID v4 or v7?

Use v4 when you just need a random, unpredictable identifier. Use v7 for database primary keys: it begins with a timestamp, so values are ordered by creation time, which improves index locality and insert performance.

Can two generated UUIDs ever be the same?

In theory yes, in practice no. A version 4 UUID has 122 random bits; you would need to generate billions of UUIDs per second for many years before a duplicate became likely.

Are these UUIDs secure and random?

Yes. They are generated with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random number generator. However, UUIDs are identifiers, not secrets — do not use them as passwords or access tokens.

Does the v1 generator expose my MAC address?

No. Instead of the network card's MAC address, a random node ID with the multicast bit set is used, exactly as RFC 9562 recommends for privacy.

What Is a UUID and Which Version Should You Use?

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier), also called a GUID in the Microsoft world, is a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, such as 3f2504e0-4f89-41d3-9a0c-0305e82c3301. UUIDs let databases, APIs, message queues and distributed systems create identifiers independently, without a central counter, while keeping the chance of a collision practically zero. This free UUID generator creates version 4 UUIDs from 122 random bits using your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, which is the right default for most primary keys, request IDs and file names.

For database keys that are inserted in large volumes, UUID version 7 is often the better choice: defined in RFC 9562, it starts with a Unix millisecond timestamp, so new IDs are naturally sorted by creation time and keep B-tree indexes compact. The generator also supports classic time-based version 1 with a random node ID instead of your MAC address. Create up to 1,000 UUIDs at once, switch to uppercase, remove hyphens or wrap them in braces or quotes, and download the list. The built-in validator checks any UUID, detects its version and variant and reveals the timestamp embedded in v1, v6 and v7 IDs.
