JSON to YAML FAQ
How do I convert JSON to YAML?
Paste your JSON into the converter and the YAML appears instantly. Objects become key: value mappings, arrays become dash-prefixed lists and nesting is expressed with indentation.
Why are some values wrapped in quotes?
Values such as yes, no, on, off, null, 1.10 or 2024-01-01 would be interpreted by YAML parsers as booleans, null, numbers or dates. Quoting them guarantees they stay strings, exactly as they were in your JSON.
Is YAML a superset of JSON?
Yes. YAML 1.2 is designed as a superset of JSON, so every valid JSON document is also valid YAML. Converting to block-style YAML simply makes it more readable for humans.
Can I use the output in Kubernetes or Docker Compose?
Yes. The converter produces standard YAML with spaces for indentation (never tabs), which works with kubectl, Helm, Docker Compose, GitHub Actions, Ansible and other YAML-based tools.
Is my JSON uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so configuration files, secrets and API data never leave your device.
Why Convert JSON to YAML?
YAML is the configuration language of modern infrastructure: Kubernetes manifests, Helm charts, Docker Compose files, GitHub Actions and GitLab CI pipelines, Ansible playbooks and OpenAPI specifications are all written in it. Because YAML is a superset of JSON, any JSON document can be expressed in YAML, but the YAML version is far easier to read and review thanks to indentation instead of braces, no mandatory quotes and support for comments. This free JSON to YAML converter turns API responses, generated configs and JSON schemas into tidy YAML in one click.
A naive conversion can silently change your data: unquoted values such as yes, no, on, off, NO (the Norway problem), 1.10 or 2024-01-01 may be read back as booleans, numbers or dates. Our converter detects these ambiguous scalars and quotes them, keeps multi-line text readable with literal block style, and lets you choose 2 or 4-space indentation, quote every string or add a --- document marker. The YAML is generated entirely in your browser, so secrets and internal configuration never leave your machine.
